When to go skiing in France?

Open from mid-December to the end of April, depending on the period, some stations can be interesting. We tell you everything in this article!

Remontées méaniques

Leaving in December:

The resorts usually open in mid-December and offer attractive rates because the snow cover is not optimal at this time of year. During the Christmas vacations, families and groups with a passion for the mountains come together. But it is not the busiest time of the year.

The days are short, some resorts in the lower and mid-mountain remain closed, but avid skiers take advantage of this to go skiing in large ski areas where the snow has already fallen.

Resorts like : Les 2 Alpes, Val Thorens or Serre Chevalier can be interesting during this period.

Take advantage of the low rates and go skiing at the opening of the season. Be careful with the snow conditions and the slopes closed at this period!

Leaving in January:

January is one of the most recommended periods for skiing in good conditions at the best prices.

Indeed, the snow cover is starting to be interesting, the school vacations being over, only the ski enthusiasts and the locals are left! Moreover, the temperature decreases and allows to have better conditions to go down the slopes.

However, be careful during the last week of January, as the rates go up for the February vacations which are approaching.

Station en altitude

Leave in February:

It is the most popular month in Europe, the school vacations bring back a large number of holidaymakers who crowd the resorts and the prices soar. Snow conditions are generally optimal but the queues at the ski passes or lifts can be a real problem for some.

If you don't mind the crowds on the slopes and in the villages, book your stay several months in advance to make sure you have room without paying last-minute rates.

Leaving in March:

This period is particularly interesting if the weather conditions allow it. Snowfalls are less frequent depending on the year and the temperature increases. However, the rates are often advantageous and the slopes are less frequented.

Be careful at the end of the month when, depending on the weather and the resorts, some shopkeepers close and some activities are no longer offered. Remember to book your stay in advance, to take full advantage of these benefits.

Leaving in April:

During good seasons and in high altitude areas, April can be the best time to get the best value for money. Resorts often have difficulty finding customers in April and offer discounts.

The temperatures are pleasant, depending on the season and the altitude the snow cover can still allow you to ski on deserted slopes.

Enjoy the last snow in resorts like : L'Alpe d'Huez, les 2 Alpes, Tignes.

Conclusion

As you can see, the period you choose determines the rates, the number of people, the weather, the activities offered and the opening of the slopes.

If you want to take full advantage of the low rates and avoid the queues, we advise you to leave at the beginning of January or in April depending on the weather conditions.

February and the beginning of March are the busiest time of the year and the most expensive. If you have no other choice or if you like crowded resorts, consider booking your stay several monthsin advance.
